8-9.30pm: John Byrne’s Irish Classical Music Vinyl Archive
A uniquely fascinating aural journey through the Irish 20th century, in collaboration with IndieCork film festival. Selecting from his vinyl archive of rare 20th century Irish Classical Music, music expert John Byrne is our insightful and encyclopedic guide.
John writes, “I would lay claim for the beginning of the Irish 20th century as being in 1936, the year that a young gay Irish composer called Frederick May found himself fleeing Austria and the spreading tentacles of Fascism. His reaction was the penning of his ‘String Quartet In C Minor’. The creation of indigenous Classical composition went very literally technicolor with the scribing of this piece. But no-one noticed at the time.
Why? The answer comes down to intentional state policy. The music went unsupported by state decree. Things slowly changed in the latter decades of the last century with the appearance of Irish Classical performers and composition on records. And thus the proper beginning of our aural story.
This presentation will give you the emergence of a genre of music in recorded form.” Accompanying visuals by IndieCork’s Tony Langlois.
